Combine two very popular day trips from Munich to see the best of Bavaria and part of Austria over two days. On day one, you'll visit the Austrian city of Salzburg, where you can admire top sights such as Mozart Square and Mirabell Palace Gardens, then head out onto Lake Wolfgangsee for an optional boat ride. The following day, venture north on the Romantic Road to discover two medieval villages, Harburg and Rothenburg, among the best preserved in Europe. You will have free time in all cities.
Salzburg and Lake District Day Trip (Day 1)
Meet your guide in central Munich and head southeast aboard a comfortable coach destined for Salzburg. When you arrive, after a drive of approximately 2 hours, you will have free time to explore the city on your own.
Stroll through the picturesque streets of Salzburg, admire the magnificent views of the Lower Bavarian Alps, stroll through the Old Town and see top sights such as Salzburg Cathedral, St. Peter's Abbey and the Square Mozart. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (own expense), and see famous sights from The Sound of Music, such as the fountain in Mirabell Gardens where Julie Andrews and the Von Trapp children sang "Do-Re-Mi."
Reboard your coach and depart Salzburg for Lake Wolfgangsee, one of the most famous in the Lake District. Stroll along the lake and take in the beautiful scenery, or choose to take a boat ride (own expense) to a pilgrimage church and the town of St Wolfgang, where you can admire the White Horse Inn , famous for being the setting for the 1900s operetta Auberge du Cheval Blanc.
On your return trip to Munich, you'll pass by Lake Mondsee, which was the setting for several scenes in the popular movie 'The Sound of Music'.
Romantic Road, Harburg and Rothenburg (Day 2): Day Trip
The next day, leave Munich by coach again, this time heading north to explore the medieval castles and villages of Germany's Romantic Road.
After a drive of approximately 1 hours, your first stop will be in the small town of Harburg, home to one of Germany's oldest, largest and best-preserved medieval castles. You will have enough free time to explore the city at your own pace.
Return to your coach to depart towards Rothenburg, passing the Swabian Crater and the town of Dinkelsbuhl. Formerly called Rothenburg ob der Tauber, it is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. You'll have approximately three hours of free time to explore, have lunch, and shop, if you wish, at your own pace (all meals and entrance tickets are at your own expense).
Many of Rothenburg's points of interest are clustered around Marktplatz, such as the town hall with its museum of Rothenburg history and St Jakob's Church, a high-ceilinged Gothic building bursting with light. If you're a Christmas lover, you'll love Kathe Wolhfahrt's Christmas shop on Herrngasse.
You will return to Munich via the Hallertau, the region producing the most hops in the world.
