You will pass through the Roman City of Baden, famous for its thermal springs, as you travel through the romantic valley of Helenental in search of Mayerling, the ancient lodge. Nowadays, it is a memorial chapel but it was also the very place of Crown Prince Rudolph, the only son of Emperor François-Joseph, who committed suicide with Baronesse Vetsera in 1889.
In the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz (1133), you will visit the medieval cloister which houses the remains of the last Babenberg. Keep an eye out as you drive past the Holdrichsmuhle, where Franz Schubert composed his song 'Les Tilleuls' before arriving at the Seegrotte.
Your visit will end with a boat ride on the largest underground lake in Europe. You will leave the Viennese Forest to return to Vienna, via the Liechtenstein Castle path.
