For those short on time, the Walk to Freedom is offered as a 4-hour option, including visits to Malay Quarter, District Six, District Six Museum, and Langa Township. This half-day option excludes the visit to Robben Island.
The phrase "No easy road to freedom" was a central theme in much of the Mass Democratic Movement's campaigns from its earliest days through the late 1980s. Understanding the current conditions in South Africa is easier when one knows the past injustices, the legacy of struggle, the promise of reconstruction and the development initiatives currently underway. Freedom was not won easily. This excursion allows you to discover the history of South Africa. It includes a brief presentation of Cape Town, one of the most mixed and sought-after cities in the world.
Discover the picturesque district of Bo-Kaap, previously known as the "Malay Quarter", a living cultural museum and home to the oldest mosque in the southern hemisphere. Learn about the unique culture, lifestyle and personality of the Cape Muslim community and their contribution to the development of South Africa.
Due to the Group Areas Act (Act restricted areas), 60 000 families of Cape have been dislodged by the force of this dynamic area sometime between 1966 and 1982. The question remains crucial District 6. We will review Zonnebloem, a now deserted area, which was part of District 6, and visit the living museum which tries to represent District 6 in different ways, like a well-woven tapestry of communal life that was torn but not forgotten.
Go to the Cape Flats where we will take a break at the Gugu S'Thebe cultural and artistic center in Langa township. The center is housed in a brightly colored old building and is dedicated to empowering the people of Langa and improving their socio-economic status. Their goal is to reduce unemployment by providing business support services and to improve life in the township through arts and culture. You'll see exhibition areas and art studios, a resource center, a warehouse, a retail store for arts and crafts, complete with a metalwork shop and a pottery workshop, and much more.
Walk around Langa with a local resident and licensed guide from the center. During the ride you will talk with the community and learn about the way of life here.
