This emblematic place has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, along with the Calanques de Piana and the Gulf of Girolata. These 3 classified places make up the Gulf of Porto.

First of all, a presentation of the Scandola Reserve is in order. You should know that this reserve has the particularity of being both maritime and terrestrial. Indeed, the Scandola Reserve was created to protect both the exceptional seabed of this place, but also the maritime coasts surrounding it because it is a complete and complementary ecosystem!
The preservation of this place makes it possible to control the number of tourists, to prohibit certain constructions, to prohibit the fishing of fish, scuba diving,… Making the place simply magical! A mask and a snorkel are enough to realize the wealth that lies at the bottom of the sea.
What does the Scandola Reserve include?
This Reserve extends from the Gulf of Galeria, in the north, to the Gulf of Girolata, further south. This land point has been protected since 1975, it is also part, on a larger scale, of the Regional Natural Park of Corsica.
Covering a total area of 1669 hectares, the distribution is rather well balanced: about 700 concern the sea and about 900 concern the land.

What species can you observe?

- Osprey:
An emblematic raptor of this reserve, it has set up its nest at the top of a rocky outcrop, inaccessible by solid ground and several meters high. Preserved from any human visit, it also benefits from a rich buffet for its daily catches. You can easily recognize it by its white underside. - The Bearded Vulture:
Another raptor present in the Reserve, the Bearded Vulture. - The Bottlenose Dolphin:
These dolphins are present in the area and visible regularly. Be attentive, open your eyes and look for them in the distance. You have a good chance of being able to observe it. - The Posidonia Herbarium:
Little known, this underwater flowering plant is a lifeblood for a large number of species. It produces oxygen, it serves as a refuge, but also as a hunting area... This herbarium is essential to the balance of this area. You will have a good chance of seeing many fish and other inhabitants of the shallow seabed. Like any plant, it needs light to grow and therefore grows at fairly shallow depths. - Unique endemic plants:
Flora lovers will be served. Indeed, the terrestrial part of the Scandola nature reserve is home to many endemic plant species, that is to say that you will not be able to find them elsewhere. These species are unique and only like Corsica! In total, more than 30 endemic species are present in this area, half of which are protected. Girolata is stop number one on a boat trip to the Scandola Reserve. This astonishing little village, perched on a rocky outcrop and accessible only by sea or on foot, arouses the curiosity of many visitors every season. Typical rock formations
Perhaps you already know that Corsica is a volcanic island. You can see it in the Scandola reserve. Red rock is characteristic of this type of formation. The Calanques of Piana

Osprey's nest
A stop that will appeal to bird watchers. Couples of ospreys have taken up residence in the heart of the reserve. One nest in particular is visible from the sea. It is high up, located on a rocky outcrop almost standing out from the rest of the coast. In all honesty, it is very high and you will only see a huge pile of branches, but if you are lucky you may be able to spot the rare hosts of this place.
The Gulf of Porto
Porto is a very pretty fishing port where it is pleasant to walk around. Its large beach and its port are also very pleasant places. In addition, the road leading to Porto, whether you arrive from the south or the north, is magnificent. A road of character, typically Corsican, but with a dazzling view of beauty.
My little advice: take your time to do this route, therefore, do not hesitate to slip to the side when possible to let the regulars pass, some will thank you with a little honk.
The Gulf of Galeria

Let's start with this very classic excursion. Climb aboard a zodiac-type boat allowing you to explore every corner of the Scandola nature reserve. The departure is from the very pretty port of Porto, nestled in the hollow of the Calanques de Piana. During these 3 hours of walk, you will discover the heart of the reserve, but also the Calanques de Piana seen from the sea and finally, you will also have the privilege of stopping in the small port of Girolata, a must on a visit to the Scandola nature reserve.

Visit of the Scandola reserve from Calvi – 4 hours
For this boat trip departing from Calvi, board a rigid-hulled boat and set off to explore the Scandola reserve. Visit of the Scandola reserve from Calvi – 6 hours

Visit of the Scandola reserve from Ajaccio or Porticcio - 1 day
For this last boat trip, I suggest a departure from Ajaccio or Porticcio. These two towns are located south of the Scandola reserve. Admittedly, you will have a little journey before reaching the heart of the reserve (about 1h30 one way), but it is worth it! You will pass by the Gulf of Porto, you will stop for lunch in Girolata before heading towards the creeks of Piana and the heart of the Scandola reserve. An unforgettable day where you will be amazed.

Visit the Scandola reserve on foot
For those who do not have sea legs, or who prefer hiking, you also have the possibility of doing some hiking to discover the Scandola nature reserve. You will thus have the privilege of being able to observe the preserved and endemic flora of this region. Be careful however to strictly respect the indicated preservation instructions: do not touch, do not pick, do not disturb the inhabitants, do not trample, … And stay on the authorized paths. The very heart of the reserve does not have a hiking trail in order to preserve it. Regarding hiking, different possibilities are available to you:
- Between the sea and the north mountains:
Literally between sea and mountain, this hiking trail stretches from Calenzana to Cargèse. In total, between 7 and days are needed to do it in full. You can only take the part passing through the reserve, namely between Galeria and Curzu, i.e. 2 stages. This part of the itinerary makes you spend a night in Girolata. You can also take part of this section and then return to Galeria by boat. - The Postman's Trail:
One of the best known steps to access the port of Girolata. Indeed, this path was previously taken by the postman to deliver the mail to the inhabitants. This trail gives you breathtaking views of the surroundings, especially when arriving at Girolata.
Practically speaking, the trail starts from the Col de la Croix, where you can park your vehicle. Bring water and good shoes!

When to visit the Scandola reserve?
From a general point of view, the best time to go to Corsica will be between May and October. But personally, it's the month of June that I prefer! The temperatures are hot, the maquis is all in bloom and the tourists have not yet arrived. The perfect combo to quietly visit the Scandola reserve. Some boat tours are only open between June and September or October for that matter. The period to avoid if you don't like crowds will be between mid-July and mid-August. How to get to Scandola Nature Reserve
The Scandola Nature Reserve is located between Galeria to the north and Porto to the south. You have only one road that directly connects these two small towns. By taking the road, plan ahead in terms of gasoline because the stations are rare on certain portions. For information, it will take about 1h15/1h30 to connect these two points.Regarding boat trips, you can leave from Calvi, Galeria, Porto, Ajaccio or Porticcio.
Where to eat in the Scandola reserve?
In villages like Girolata, Galeria or Porto, you will find something to eat without worries. If you leave for the day, you will also have the possibility of planning a picnic (plan a small bag so as not to leave waste behind you of course). Everything is exceptional: the cliffs, their colors, the color of the water, the seabed, the endemic species, the more or less rare seabirds, the charming little village of Girolata,...
