Porquerolles is one of the Golden Islands (with Port Cros and the Ile du Levant). It seduces by the diversity of its landscapes which give the impression of passing from Brittany to the Antilles while being off Toulon. This protected island is home to many wonders. You can discover it on foot, by bike, or by boat, and it's even better off-season.
Very rich landscapes
If you allow it, the nicest thing is to rent your own boat to reach the island of Porquerolles. Otherwise, it is prudent to book your passage from Toulon or La Seyne sur Mer. From the Tour Fondue, the shuttles are more frequent (info).
Cars do not circulate in Porquerolles, so you need to bring good shoes and clothes that allow you to get around by bike. Once there, you will discover a superb island 7 km long and 3 km wide. It is small but very varied. To the east, Notre Dame beach was “elected” the most beautiful beach in Europe in 2015. From the parking lot, the panorama is exceptional. Lagoon blue waters, a very large cove-shaped beach will give you the impression of being in the Antilles.
At the eastern point, the Cap des Mèdes, a former military site, takes you more towards Brittany. As for the view from Fort Sainte Agathe, it is magnificent.
Not just the beach
In Porquerolles you can relax on the sandy beaches to the north but you can also put on your walking shoes or climb on your bike (mountain bike, electric bike ...) to reach the West and its famous Argent beach. At the end, Fort du Langoustier watches over the channel between the island and the mainland. Direction the South, its famous vineyards, olive trees and other fruit trees. In spring, the earth looks like an immense bouquet of cistus, myrtle, fragrant heather.
We stop at the Moulin du Bonheur to discover the associated legends and we push to the Fort de l'Alycastre. The latter was first dedicated to the defense of the island before becoming a prison and then the property of the Conservatoire du littoral. Legends have also sprung up there ...
Porquerolles is also its impressive and varied underwater fauna. We discover it with mask and snorkel, following snorkeling or diving in protected waters to marvel at the wrecks, coral rock, grouper rock or other dry moray eels.
