What are the main places of interest in the Ecrins National Park?
After this short presentation of the Ecrins National Park and before detailing the different aspects of the park, namely nature and culture, let's quickly run through the main places of interest in the park.
Places of interest in the Ecrins National Park- Madame Carle's Meadow
- The white glacier
- The silver mine of L'Argentière-la Bessée
- Vallouise – Pelvoux
- La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar & Gioberney
- Champoleon Valley
- Serre Chevalier Valley
- Lake of Serre-Ponçon
Madame Carle's Meadow
Accessible from Vallouise-Pelvoux, the Pré de Madame Carle is undoubtedly one of the best-known sites to do in the Ecrins National Park. In the heart of the Vallouise valley, it is accessible by a road starting from the hamlet of Ailefroide.
Former fertile plain, it is at this location that the Black and White glaciers met. Nowadays, with the melting of the glaciers, it is rather a pile of stones in the heart of sublime mountain peaks.
The site is nonetheless exceptional, and many hikes and climbs start from the Pré de Madame Carle, in particular those towards the Glacier Blanc, the Barre des Ecrins, etc. If you are with the family, stop off at the Cézanne refuge, behind which a multitude of marmots have taken up residence.
A few hundred years ago, the white glacier and the black glacier joined at this place. Now they are miles apart.
The white glacier
It is one of the most visited sites in the Ecrins National Park. A sublime landscape that contributes to the reputation of the Parc des Écrins. The glacier originates at an altitude of more than 4m and ends at around 000m. A hike, starting from the meadow of Madame Carle will take you there without too much difficulty.
The white glacier is a privileged place for observing marmots.
The silver mine of L'Argentière-la Bessée
We will talk about it a little later in this article in our section devoted to the culture and heritage of the Ecrins National Park. However, let me quickly tell you about one of the most touristic places in the park, which welcomes nearly 11 visitors each year: the Argentière-La-Bessée silver mine.
Exploited at different times in history, between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries and then in the XNUMXth century, the mine was once the largest employer in the region.
Several kilos of silver were then extracted each day from the mine.
Invaded by the Fournel torrent, it took several years to finally be able to visit this mine in complete safety.
It is now possible to visit the mine via a guided tour of approximately 2h30 available every day, every 20 minutes in summer.
Vallouise – Pelvoux
Typical of the region, the villages of Vallouise – Pelvoux and Vigneaux are among the most authentic.
The activities around this small valley are numerous between hiking, mountaineering, via ferrata, horse riding and fishing, you will not be bored.
La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar & Gioberney
On the other side of the park, in the Valgaudemar valley, discover two places of interest, the small village of La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar and Gioberney.
The first is a popular place for hikers passing through the region. The small village offers a few accommodations and shops as well as the start of many hikes, including those leading to the Pétarel lakes or the Oulles du Diable.
The second place, Gioberney, is one of the most beautiful natural cirques in the Ecrins National Park. It houses a refuge – restaurant with a magnificent terrace. From this site you can go to the Voile de la Marie waterfall or the Lac du Lauzon.

From this place you can also reach the resort of Orcières-Merlette located not far away, which also offers very beautiful hikes and many activities, both in summer and in winter.

Let's move away from the heart of the Écrins National Park to go to the Serre-Chevalier valley. Even if it is not strictly speaking located in the park, it borders it.
This valley offers a multitude of activities of all kinds, such as thrilling activities such as paragliding or bungee jumping; but also aquatic and nautical activities such as canoeing, kayaking and of course many hikes, easily accessible thanks to the various ski lifts offered by the valley.
If you go to the surroundings, do not hesitate to visit the town of Briançon as well as its citadel which is worth the detour.
Lake of Serre-Ponçon
Here too, we are moving away a little from the heart of the Ecrins park, but the Serre-Ponçon lake and its many activities are among the places of interest in the surroundings of the Ecrins national park.
This huge mountain lake has some great surprises in store for you. From nautical activities, to exotic landscapes, there are many things to do. You can also learn more about its history thanks to the Muséoscope.
