The history of Delphi dates back in time to at least 1500 BC, before the Classical Greek period. Famous throughout the ancient world, Delphi was recognized as the center of the Earth by Zeus but it was also known because of its oracle. The eternal flame burned in the Temple of Apollo during the Pythian Games, precursor to the modern Olympics, and the city's role went beyond Ancient Greece when Roman emperors protected the site and continued to send delegations to seek advice from the oracle.
During your Delphi excursion, see the physical structures associated with this incredibly long history, and learn about their rich mythology. You'll also have plenty of time to visit the impressive museum and see its many artefacts dating back to the XNUMXth century BC. The highlight includes the Naxian Sphinx, the statue of Antinoos, and the bronze sculpture of a charioteer.
Then we continue the excursion to the pretty mountain village of Arachova, perched 3 feet (117 meters) on the southern slopes of Mount Parnassus. You'll have time for lunch or to enjoy a snack with plenty of choices available (own expense), and wander the streets, visiting some of the many craft shops. Enjoy the panoramic views before the return trip to Athens.
After lunch, continue to the fortified Monastery of Saint Lucas. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, explore its remarkable Byzantine architecture, enjoy its peaceful location and discover its marvelous well-preserved works of art.
