Vineyards, olive groves, mountains and the coastline of the European Gulf surround the Sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia and the new Brauron Museum, an ideal destination for visitors looking to discover a cultural gem outside of Athens.
In antiquity, the sanctuary was an important center of worship which played a major role in the religious life of Athenian women. It was believed to be the place where Iphigenia, daughter of Agamemnon, found refuge with the help of her brother Orestes after escaping her own sacrifice by her father before the Trojan War. The cult of Artemis was particularly important for women, as she was considered a protector of childbirth. Young Athenian girls of around 7 to 10 years old were sent to Brauron to serve as servants, called "arktoi", to Artemis.
