The Battle of the Somme was fought from July to November 1916, and was one of the most important battles of the First World War. What remains to be seen today remains truly impressive.
After traveling to France by Eurostar, you will be met in Lille to take a small group tour of the Somme by minibus.First, you will take a tour of the Somme battlefield covering the main sites of the day calamitous, when the British army suffered its greatest loss ever in a single day, with nearly 60.000 casualties, through the entire five months of the battle.
You'll see Delville Wood, the Welsh Memorial at Mametz Wood, the enormous Lochnagar mine crater, the sunken lane where Accrington's cronies were virtually wiped out, the battlefield at Pozieres and Windmill Hill (both sites important to Australians ), Courcelette, site of the first significant use of tanks in support of Canadian troops, and the nearby tank memorial. The undisputed highlight of the day will be a guided walk through the preserved site of the Beaumont Hamel battlefield.
