Two French set off to conquer the West (and not only!)
Who are Delphine and Jean-Philippe?
She is Delphine, 32, living in the Jura but “Lyonnaise by heart”, who particularly adores traveling, singing, animals… He is Jean-Philippe, 34 years old, living in the Jura but Lyonnais by heart (hey, hey!), who likes sports, indie music and good food. And who also loves to travel. "Fortunately !"
Journalists by trade, the two launched a personal blog in 2012, At the End of the Road, where they share their travels and road trips around the world. But especially in the United States, a country they literally fell in love with.
Lost In The USA, c’est quoi ?
After having traveled thousands of kilometers in the States, Delphine and Jean-Philippe have decided to take the plunge in 2015. On the menu: a sabbatical and the creation of a new site, Lost In The USA, designed as a planner road trips in the United States. The story of never being (totally) lost while traveling on Route 66 or in the middle of Idaho.
On Lost In The USA, you will therefore find all the essential information to organize your trip, establish your “bucket list” (by adding the points of interest that you do not want to miss). And once the route is complete, all you have to do is buckle up your suitcases and your seatbelt: come on, the American roads await!
What was the destination of your first trip (child or adult)?
Delphine : I stayed in France for a long time and had to leave for the first time to go to Greece when I was a teenager… My first “real” big trip was really my first time in the United States, in 2008.
Jean Philippe : I went to Quebec as a baby to see some family! Obviously, I don't remember.
What made you want to travel and then share this passion on a blog?
D and JP: We trained each other! Helping a little professional distortion, I came home one evening and Jean-Philippe told me: “We have a blog!”. We both wanted to share our travels, that they continue in a way and “serve” to others.
What was the trip that struck you the most? Why ?
D: On each trip, I have the impression that the last one is the most striking! The southern United States marked me a lot, for its atmospheres, and I often also think back to Santorini, a Greek island where time seems to stand still and where I am sure to return one day.
JP : The one we're doing, a three-month road trip in the United States.
Which country has “surprised” you the most? Why ?
D: Certainly the United States again. You never know what to expect, from one state to another. People are so welcoming, they would give you their shirts… but in return, be careful, no hugs! (only the hug is tolerated).
JP : Me, it is not a country but an American state: Oregon. I found it simply breathtaking.
Which country has you “disappointed” the most? Why ?
D and JP: There really isn't any. Maybe just, sometimes we have “self-disappointed” ourselves by hoping too much from something mythical. Rome for example or the Pyramids of Egypt.
What is your worst travel memory?
D and JP: Last year JP lost his baggage. We were very disappointed at the start of the stay and we are still at odds with insurance. The big galley.
Can you give a funny or unusual anecdote that happened to you while traveling?
D and JP: We broke down in the American desert at the very start of our road trip. Hell. It was super hot and we did an hour of tow truck without air conditioning… But we have a good time thinking about it. There have also been two or three times when we have been “tourist” (like being dragged by Bedouins on camels over 10 meters for 50 euros…).
Which country do you dream of going to?
D: Paradise islands like Tahiti. Asia, Costa Rica. And in the United States, Hawaii and Alaska.
JP : New Zealand.
In general, what are you looking for when traveling?
D: The change of scenery. But with a few benchmarks (laughs).
JP : Experiences.
Is there a country where, “oddly”, you don't want to go at all?
D: Eastern or African countries (excluding the south).
JP : Belarus.
And closer to us, what is your favorite place in France?
D: The island of Oléron (and the Grande Motte!).
JP : Lyon.
Bonus: when and where is your next trip?
D and JP: We are right in it! We'll see after !
