A 45-minute drive up the Northern Highway, passing villages and plains with many bird species, brings you to Tower Hill, where you board a boat on the New River .
As you cross the many streams and lagoons, you will spot birds including falcons and kites. The river is lined with leafy trees, orchids and bromeliads, and you might see delicate birds called jacanas treading lightly on lily pads, as well as elusive crocodiles basking in the morning sunlight.
At the entrance to the New River Lagoon, you can see the ruins of Lamanai (Mayan for submerged crocodile). Once at the site, you will visit the small museum which displays many ancient relics found at Lamanai.
You can then embark on a 2,5 km jungle hike to visit the Temple of the Mask, one of the highest Mayan pyramids, the stucco mask of the Sun God "Kinich Ahau"; an intricately carved Stellae, and the Temple of Jaguar Masks. These sites sound awe-inspiring amidst the songs of tropical rainforest birds and the haunting cry of howler monkeys.
Your guide will point out copal and Ramon trees, which were of great importance in ancient times. For the jungle trek, you will need to bring insect repellent and sturdy walking shoes.
At the end of the tour, you will have lunch under thatched palapas near the edge of the lagoon. After lunch you will have free time for more excursion in the tropical rainforest.
