Pay in Swiss Franc in Geneva

In Switzerland, the local currency is the Swiss Franc. To convert euros into Swiss francs, it's simple: 1€ = 1,07CHF.
Life in Geneva is a bit more expensive than in France. In order to avoid unpleasant surprises and pay bank charges that can sometimes be high, you can opt for an online bank offering a card with extremely low bank charges. The principle is simple: for each of the currencies you want to use (€ and CHF here), open a virtual account and change the amount you want in the currency you want. You then have a single card for all your currencies. When paying, the card will automatically take the correct currency.

Change from € to CHF at a lower cost:

We use this system ourselves for our trips abroad and it is really very practical. It also saves us from having a large amount of cash on us. These transfers are done in real time and from an easy-to-use application. Exchange rates are among the lowest in France. In short, only positive points for this card! Explore TransferWise

How to come to Geneva?

Several solutions will be possible to reach Geneva.

  • By car
First of all, you can come easily by car: whether from the Jura or Annecy, access to Geneva is relatively simple. Be careful if you take the motorway: you will have to bring a 40 CHF vignette. The latter is valid for one year and allows you to travel freely on all motorways in Switzerland. If you do not intend to visit Switzerland more than that, then avoid taking the highway, you will save the purchase of the sticker.
  • By train
You can also arrive by train. Geneva train station is very well located, just a few steps from the city center. Different cities in Europe serve it: Paris, Lyon, but also from Italy, Germany and even Austria. Another question will arise if you reach Geneva by plane: how to reach the city center from the airport and vice versa?
Again, several solutions are possible:

Probably the simplest and most effective solution: the bus. From Geneva airport, you have different bus lines that connect the airport and the city center. On average, there are bus departures every 8 to 15 minutes. When you arrive in Geneva by plane, you can benefit from a free transport ticket valid for 80 minutes. What to do in Geneva?

Now that you have all the cards in hand to prepare your stay in Geneva, it's time to answer the main question of this article: what to do in Geneva?
There are many places to visit and see, here is a non-exhaustive list of all there is to do on site. We will then see some essential places to do around Geneva.

The water jet

Let's start with the symbol of Geneva, probably the most famous place in the city: the famous jet d'eau, located on Lake Geneva. This jet of water is visible from afar and can be observed from different places: from the shore opposite, from the cruise on Lake Geneva, from the heights of the city or even at the foot of this jet. You can admire it from all angles, from all sides.

Visit Geneva: what to do and see in Geneva

For the record, know that this water jet has been in service since 1891. Originally, it was fitted out to control the pressure of a hydraulic plant. This excess pressure gave birth to the jet of water. Since then, it has been a major tourist attraction and a symbol of the city's identity.

Did you know?
To give you an idea of the size of this jet of water, here are some significant figures. His height : it can reach up to 140 meters high! His speed : water comes out at a speed of 200 km/h. Its flow : no less than 500 liters of water per second! Impressive isn't it?
Warning ! Depending on the direction and strength of the wind, the water jet can change direction quickly and surprise you. The pier to access the jet can be wet and therefore slippery.

The water jet does not run continuously. Indeed, you will be able to see it when the weather allows it, throughout the day: from 10 a.m. to sunset approximately (times may vary from one season to another).
From March to October, an illumination of the jet is organized: from sunset to 22:30 p.m. or 23:30 p.m. in high season.
Generally, the maintenance of the water jet is carried out at least in November. For the duration of the maintenance, the water jet is not in operation.
Do not hesitate to consult the timetables and news of the water jet on the official Geneva website.

Lake Geneva and its quays

You are not unaware that Geneva is located on the shores of Lake Geneva. The border between France and Switzerland runs through the middle. Due to its surface area, just over 580 km2, it is the largest alpine and subalpine lake in Europe.
Most of its banks are now exploited: coastal developments, meadows, crops, privatization, etc.
Geneva is located at the extreme south of the lake and occupies part of its shores. The surroundings of the lake as well as the banks of the Rhône are very popular for walking, strolling or even organizing various events. The lake is an integral part of life in Geneva.

Visit Geneva: what to do and see in Geneva

In summer, it is the place of life for water sports enthusiasts, swimmers or cruise passengers.
All year round, it's the perfect place to come for a walk, have a drink or even eat. Many restaurants and bars are located along the quays of Lake Geneva, giving a crazy charm to this city. It is not for nothing that the harbor of Geneva is one of the most beautiful in the world!

Visit Geneva: what to do and see in Geneva Take a cruise on Lake Geneva:
The best way to discover Lake Geneva is to take a cruise on it. Leave for 1 hour aboard a boat that will take you to discover the lake, its quays, its water jet, its different districts, … And discover a new facet of Geneva, seen from the lake! You will not be disappointed and you will see incredible places, magnificent villas and quiet neighborhoods, surrounded by nature, just a few kilometers from Geneva! Book your cruise

Our favorite by the lake comes back to a very trendy concept and completely in tune with the times: Sunbathing! This is a place on the docks that consists of different food-trucks; large spaces with sofas, tables, armchairs, etc. to meet up with friends; a small concert stage, … It is also the place where various activities and events are held. The particularity ? It's in the open air and therefore totally ephemeral: Bronzette comes back every summer, when the fine weather makes it possible to set up the terraces and organize yoga classes facing the lake!

The English Garden

A few steps from the lake and not far from the water jet, I invite you to take a tour of the English Garden. This magnificent garden was built over many years. Begun in 1850, it has continued to evolve and be embellished over the years. Initially called La Promenade du Parc, it was finally named Jardin Anglais following the typically English landscaping done there.
It is very pleasant to stroll in the middle of the tree-lined paths. Some trees are remarkable for their age and size.
The essential elements of this garden will be:

  • The Flower Clock
One of the most photographed monuments by tourists in Geneva! This large clock made up of thousands of flowers tells you the time quite naturally!
  • The Fountain of the Four Seasons
This monument is located in the heart of the garden, you cannot miss it!
  • Le Monument national
Installed in 1869, this monument recalls Geneva's entry into the Swiss Confederation.

The Barn Park

Here is the largest park in the city! This green space is worth a detour for many reasons: for the master town dating from the end of the XNUMXth century, for its magnificent rose garden, its French-style garden or even for its remarkable trees that are several hundred years old!
In addition to all this, you can enjoy beautiful views of the lake and you should know that this garden is managed in an eco-responsible way: no chemicals, insects to regulate biodiversity and sheep to maintain the lawns ! A real haven of peace for visitors but also for the local flora and fauna.

Old Geneva

Geneva has a very charming Old Town, a must-do! Old Geneva is located high up, majestically overlooking the lake. The winding streets and the buildings date from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, but the plans that were used to build this Old Town date from the Middle Ages. Some streets still bear names from that time.
The buildings of the Old Town are recognizable thanks to the stone used for their construction: the molasse coming from the lake, of gray color.
Among the important places to do in Old Geneva, I invite you to see:

  • Saint-Pierre Cathedral
The Cathedral and its archaeological site are among the essential things to do in Geneva. We will talk about this place and its important history in the next part.
  • The International Museum of the Reformation
In this museum, find all the history of Geneva and the Protestant reform which took place in the XNUMXth century.
  • The Tavel House
It is the oldest private house in Geneva, now transformed into a museum. On several floors, find different exhibitions retracing the evolution of the city through the centuries. I advise you to go to the attic: a magnificent 30 m2 model, representing Geneva in 1850, is on display there.
  • The House of Rousseau and Literature
This is where Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born. Today it is a museum of contemporary literature.
  • The Zubov Foundation Museum
This house is a perfect example of the luxurious residences of the XNUMXth century. She visits by appointment.
  • The Barbier-Mueller Museum
This museum exhibits many works from primitive art, one of the most important collections in the world.
  • City Hall
This building was built over several centuries: from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century, giving a very interesting variety of architectural styles.

This is the oldest square in town. It is very pleasant to walk there or to take a break during your visit to the Old Town.

Saint-Pierre Cathedral

As we have just mentioned, Saint-Pierre Cathedral is located in the heart of Old Geneva. It overlooks the city and offers a breathtaking view of the lake.

Visit Geneva: what to do and see in Geneva

The visit to this cathedral takes place in several stages:

  • The interior of the cathedral
The interior of this cathedral allows you to learn a little more about its history. You should know that it is a reformed cathedral since the XNUMXth century. You will find a very interesting mix of styles inside: between Gothic and Romanesque. You may also be surprised at the contrast between the interior of the cathedral, which turns out to be very sober, without color and without decoration; with the chapel immediately to the right of the entrance. The latter is lively and very well decorated. At the time, the whole of the cathedral was like this, but following the reform, the only objective was to devote itself entirely to the bible and therefore to remove all the colors and other signs moving away from the main objective.
For this visit, we took a guided tour provided by the tourist office of the city of Geneva. The latter was extremely interesting and rewarding!
  • Towers
Once you have visited the interior, I strongly urge you to head towards the towers. The latter offer you an exceptional panorama of the city, the lake and the water jet in the distance! On a clear day, you can even make out Mont-Blanc. But be careful, some 150 steps await you to reach the top.
  • The archaeological site
After visiting the cathedral and its towers, you can end your visit with the archaeological site of the cathedral located next door. The latter is very rich and shows you the archaeological history of the city from the XNUMXnd century BC until the construction of the cathedral, which began in the XNUMXth century.

It is located in the Plaimpalais district and houses a large collection of objects, photos and videos. It is made up of 5 spaces representing the 5 continents.

The Philippe Patek Museum

Here is a very interesting museum in the capital of watchmaking: the Philippe Patek museum. On several floors, you can admire an impressive collection of clocks, watches, enamelware, etc. Some jewels are quite striking, I am thinking in particular of the tiny clock mounted on a ring. On some pieces, you can observe the complex mechanism of the clocks. On others, the patterns and details are quite stunning. It is difficult to imagine the number of hours needed to make such jewelry as the details are neat and meticulous. A very beautiful exhibition, which will probably please Madame more than Monsieur, but which is worth a look!

The Contemporary Art Center of Geneva

Founded in 1974, the contemporary art center in Geneva does not have a permanent exhibition. It is a place of work and creation giving rise to temporary exhibitions. The center is located not far from the Plaine des Plainpalais.

Brunswick Monument

Located on the Quai du Mont-Blanc, between two luxury hotels, the Beau Rivage and the Ritz Carlton, is the Jardin des Alpes. In the middle of it sits the Brunswick Monument. The latter is none other than a mausoleum, that of Duke Charles II of Brunswick.
Driven out of his native country, Germany, the duke found refuge first in Paris and then in Geneva where he would end his days. On his death the duke bequeaths his entire fortune to the city of Geneva. In his honor this mausoleum was built in 1879, 6 years after his death.

The Pâquis Baths

The Bains des Pâquis are one of the most popular places in the city. Built in 1872, these baths have been renovated on several occasions to be today one of the favorite places of the people of Geneva.
It is one of the only accesses to the lake for the inhabitants of the city. They are installed on a pier ending in a lighthouse.
There are many spaces to put down your towel but also pools for swimming, cabins, terraces of sports facilities, diving board, as well as a hammam, trick bath, massage parlour.
There is also a refreshment bar with one of the cheapest daily specials in Geneva.
Regular performances are given, especially in the summer with concerts.
A place of gathering and relaxation for Genevans, summer and winter alike.

The Broken Chair

Probably one of the symbols of Geneva with the water jet, the Cassée Chairs is opposite the Palais des Nations. This chair was set up here by the city of Geneva, at the request of the association Handicap International, to show its opposition and the fight against the use of anti-personnel mines and cluster bombs. ammunition. These mines make many victims around the world, who are for the most part innocent, who can affect both children and the elderly. These mines are the subject of numerous mobilizations on the part of the association to fight against their use.
This 12 meter high chair stands on 3 legs, its 4th having been the victim of an anti-personnel bomb. Despite this, she remains standing and proud! This is the message conveyed by this gigantic sculpture.
