After my article on the visit to Milan, today I am going to talk to you about Bergamo. I visited this city at the same time as my trip to Milan, indeed these cities are only about sixty kilometers away, it is a safe bet that you will also visit these cities during the same stay.
Bergamo, the two citiesThe lower town
First of all you should know that Bergamo is divided into two parts. Two cities within the city. The first city, the one by which you will necessarily arrive, whether you take the train, the bus or the car, is the lower town. The lower town is the most recent but also the largest. It is in this part of the city that we decided to stay. You will find many hotels there at more affordable prices than the upper town. You will therefore find the train station and all the accesses to the airport, motorway etc. Even if this part of the city is rather pleasant, there is nothing extraordinary to see there.
La ville haute, Citta Alta
The interesting part of this city is, you will understand, the upper town also called Citta Alta. This is the old town, it is accessible on foot but I strongly advise you to take the funicular. It will cost you 2 euros if I remember correctly. This is the most practical way to reach the upper town, a few minutes' journey and you are in the city centre.
The upper town is really magnificent, you will only find small streets or alleys and old stone buildings. There aren't really any monuments to visit, the whole city can be visited; shops, cafes are typical. Few visits therefore but a few places to see.
- The Old Square, a small one located in the heart of the city of Bergamo.
- Santa Maria Maggiore, the most beautiful church in the city, to visit without hesitation.
- The castle of San Vigilio, located in height, it will offer you an impregnable view of the city of Bergamo.
Note that since 2006, the city of Bergamo has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Small pleasures of Bergamo
If you go to Bergamo, you will not be able to miss many small pastries in which you will not be able to resist entering and tasting some of the specialties of the region.
In addition to snacks, it is very pleasant to eat in one of Bergamo's trattorias and enjoy a good Italian pizza or a polenta, the specialty of northern Italy.
Getting to BergamoTo reach Bergamo, several solutions are available to you. As I told you in the introduction, you will certainly visit this city during a trip to Milan, or vice versa. You should know that if you visit Milan and travel with low-cost companies, such as Ryanair, you will land at Bergamo airport. Bergamo can therefore be reached, as you will have understood, by plane thanks to its airport, buses will take you to the center of the city.
If you decide, like me, to start your trip in Milan and end in Bergamo, you will reach Bergamo by train from Milan. It will cost you 6 euros and it will take you between 45 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes.
