In Saint-Martin, the time has come for reconstruction. Six months ago, Hurricane Irma hit the island hard, sinking it into hellish chaos. The numbers are quite worrying; eleven people died during the tragedy and 90% of the island is to be rebuilt. As the island is gradually rebuilding itself, a new hurricane season is brewing. If you like humanitarian aid and you want to give of yourself to help this island become paradise again, here are some ideas for actions you can take to help rebuild it.
Donate
Many associations are currently collecting donations to meet the needs of the inhabitants of the island. The Fondation de France, the Red Cross and even the Secours Populaire are in place and each week unblock funds which they send to Saint-Martin. You can, if you wish, contribute to the reconstruction of the island by making a donation to one of these associations. You will find all the necessary information on their site. Every euro counts.
If you are unable to donate money, then contact collection centers such as Care France to donate food, clothing, school supplies ... Vegetables and fruit are scarce on the island. You can send a small basket to people in need, which will be invaluable to them. Any help is welcome. And if you have already applied for an esta visa to spend your vacation there, why not extend your stay by a few days to help Saint-Martin?
Aid according to the activity sector
Apart from financial aid, Saint-Martin relies heavily on teams of volunteers. Building experts are the most sought after to reconstruct the island as much as possible. The goal is to make it even more beautiful than before in order to try to make the inhabitants forget the ordeal they have been living for months. Carpenters, electricians, masons… All will be taken care of and accommodated by the association.
Volunteers trained in psychological support are also required as well as people from the health sector in order to treat on site people injured or very weak following the hurricane.
Many structures are also looking for help, such as restaurants, shops or even an equestrian center! No matter what field of activity you are in, any help is welcome. Missions usually last a week. Do not hesitate to contact the associations, describing your knowledge and your socio-professional sector. These will redirect to places where you will be most useful.
